Homebrew Website Club - Asia Pacific

Online! Zoom!

A Homebrew Website Club in the Asia Pacific time zone, held remotely, for all to join and chat about all things IndieWeb!

Join the 🌏 Asia Pacific edition of Homebrew Website Club (HWC)!

HWC is a meetup for anyone interested in personal websites and the independent, small web. Whether you’re building your first site, improving an existing one, or just curious about owning your content and building a presence online without Big Tech or silos. You’re warmly invited.

Why is there another remote HWC event?

Existing remote HWCs are centred around US and European time zones. This session is created to make it easier for people in Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and nearby regions to join and take part in the IndieWeb conversation.

The “Asia Pacific” label just indicates the time zone. You’re welcome to join from anywhere in the world!

Event status

If the event is cancelled or postponed, it will be indicated on this page.

What to expect

We’ll discuss a variety of topics, such as website ideas and design, HTML/CSS, personal publishing, and practical ways to take control of your online identity. There’s also time for casual conversation, progress sharing/demos, and getting to chat with other members of the IndieWeb community!

A photo screenshot will be taken midway during the event (with ample notice, you don't have to be in it if you don't want to). And there is no expectation for you to turn on video if you so wish.

It's a good idea to have these in your pocket before the meeting:

  • Prepare a brief 1-2 minute self-introduction (when there are newcomers)
  • Bring along at least one topic/idea/question for group discussion (if we run out of topics!)

Requirements

  1. Please read the code of conduct before attending. We aim to keep this a welcoming, respectful space where everyone can participate comfortably.
  2. AI-assisted technology such as transcribing or recording tools are not allowed during these meetings.

Time

HWC Asia Pacific will run for 1h 30m, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm HKT (9:30–11:00am UTC). You can join (or leave) at any time during this period. The tentative plan is to run the Asia Pacific edition twice a month, depending on how much interest there is.

Notes and participation

Participants are encouraged to help take shared notes during the meeting in the Etherpad (a collaborative writing tool) linked above. These notes will later be archived on the IndieWeb wiki.

The Zoom link will be shared on this page shortly before the meetup begins.

RSVP (optional)

There's no RSVP needed—just show up! Join the Zoom call (no account is required) and say hello. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience.

But if your personal website supports it, you can post an Indie RSVP or login to this site and click the "I'm Going" button below.

Moderator

This meetup is moderated by Naty S. Her IndieWeb chat name is: burgeonlab. If you are based in this time zone and have interest in co-hosting, please reach out to Naty.

Questions?

If you’d like to get some help, you can ask on the IndieWeb chat using the event channel. You can use IRC, Discord, Slack or chat in the browser.

    HWC Asia Pacific: Round 2

Can’t believe it is already nearly two weeks since the inaugural HWC: Asia Pacific event—this means meetup #2 is happening next Wednesday! (At the moment, HWC: AP runs on a bi-monthly basis on a Wednesday.)

    Who Is This For?

Do you want to learn more about the IndieWeb and small web community? What does it mean to own your content? Do you want to rely less on Big Tech and escape the algorithm? Want to ask some questions about making your own website? This meetup is for you!

    What Will Be Different?

    • I am hoping to see some returning participants so we can follow up with some of the progress made and help if there are any challenges they faced while making their website.
    • Of course, it’ll be great if there are newcomers again, but with intros done last time, I’m hoping the group feels more comfortable with each other and can chat more freely and casually as time goes on.
    • Maybe a few can try doing screen-sharing demos to show us what they’re working on!

    Zoom Alternatives?

As an open-source and privacy enthusiast, I am not a fan of using Zoom for the meeting. Therefore, I will be investigating if there are any reliable alternatives that can be used (with no requirements of opening an account for participants). If you have any suggestions, please let me know!

In the meantime, HWC: AP will continue with Zoom.

    Here are some possible alternatives:

    • Jitsi Meet — self-hostable, but on the free instance up to ~30 participants, not sure reliability and time limits
    • Proton Meet free for one-hour, up to 50 participants
    • MiroTalk P2P — self-hostable, maybe lower server requirements, free instance is for testing only (I think)
    • Mumble — voice-only chat, up to 100 participants on Disroot’s instance

I might be doing a test run in the near future which I will share in the IndieWeb chat.

    Inaugural Event Recap

I didn’t get a chance to share my thoughts about it yet. So I am just writing a recap post (will share link here once published) if you want to read about my experience as a first-time “official” host of an IndieWeb event!

    Feedback

If you have any comments or thought you want to share, please do so with confidence to me or any of the IndieWeb organizers. I’m always open to feedback and learning opportunities, so please reach out if anything is bothering you or feel like can do with improvements.
